Using Black Keys as Landmarks to Find Notes 🎹🔍
Cognitive science and music education research show that relying on stickers creates extrinsic cues that interfere with developing true pattern recognition and automaticity. Stickers act as a crutch, encouraging dependence on visual aids rather than building an internal mental map of the keyboard. Stickers are simply unnecessary when you focus on developing pattern recognition instead. (I do love beautiful and motivational stickers for notebooks and planners—but not on the keys!) You’ll learn faster and on a deeper level without them. Reward yourself in other ways, and keep the piano nice and clean. Try the exercise and trust your growing instincts! How did you do? 🎶
